Dear Chancellor Creighton and members of university leadership,
I write as a member of the public and a supporter of public higher education. I am concerned that Texas Tech’s current course-content review regime censors teaching and learning related to gender identity and sexuality by requiring Board of Regents oversight and directing faculty to remove or omit flagged material while review is pending. Whatever the stated rationale, this functions as censorship in practice and undermines the mission of a public university: rigorous, evidence-based education and the open exchange of ideas.
I urge Texas Tech leadership to act promptly and publicly: end any process that imposes prior restraint on lawful, discipline-relevant instruction; affirm that faculty and students retain academic freedom consistent with professional standards; and provide transparent written guidance, clear timelines, and due-process protections. I would welcome a written response explaining what steps your office will take to address these concerns.
